What is
Periodontal Disease?
What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is the inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the surrounding bone that supports the teeth. Usually caused by plaque build-up, gum disease progresses in three stages—gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis.

Left untreated, the supporting gum tissue and bone deteriorate, leading to formation of gaps between the teeth, loosening and subsequent loss of teeth. Besides unsightly gaps, gum disease can also result in tooth loss, the ability to chew and speak, and increase the risk of other health issues like diabetes and heart disease.

How to Spot Periodontal Disease?
  • Red, tender and/or swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Painful chewing
  • Receding gums
  • Loose, sensitive teeth

Gum disease can progress and undermine the soft tissue and bone support for the teeth, causing irreversible tooth loss. Seek prompt gum treatment should you notice the above symptoms.

for Gum Disease Treatment?

Beyond receiving general dentistry education, a periodontist undergoes three additional years of rigorous, specialised medical and surgical training in periodontics, and is skilled in treating all stages of gum diseases safely and effectively.
